The Child Savers April 20, 2009 Initially Child-Savers were those who pushed for reform for the treatment of children. They advocated removal of children from woeful houses, the creation of policies for the prevention of cruelty to children, education reform, and the introduction of the march on care system, which was intended to deinstitutionalize children. This movement also focused on changing the treatment of juveniles within the justice system (Platt 22). It was by dint of the child-saving movement that the modern system of delinquency-control emerged in the United States (Platt 22). Child-savers was in part an offshoot of the feminist movement which was gaining ground in the fight to get women out from behind the broom and into the scotch and political mainstream, but this in itself was a dilemma as women were considered the natural caretakers of children (Platt 26) and, therefore; it was deemed appropriate for them to spearhead the movement whose base was to l ook to the welfare of children. Women were the teachers, and the care-givers. How could these stay at home tasks be enveloped into the feminist movement? It was educated middle-class women who, having more empty time, but a limited choice of careers that took on the push for the rights of children.
Feminist and anti-feminist assumptions seemed curiously to collide (Platt 26). Efforts of the child-savers eventually looked to the long-neglected needs of flea-bitten children. They began to identify and classify delinquent behaviors in children and sought to crystalize these behaviors. It was felt that a separate system , one entirely unconnected from the adult ! system, would best serve not only the globe interest, but the best interest of the child. This new system would for the kickoff time focus on helping young offenders, not criminalize them (Platt 28). Reformatories were the first step.
