A republic plagued with civil wars and neighborly infighting is bound to not remain a republic long. such was the fate of Rome. The final years of the Roman Republic dictum nearly a dozen civil wars; the final war, the date of Actium, ultimately leading to the Republics demise. In such turmoil, as origin becomes instable and violence common, a nation seemingly begs for the emergence of individual to stabilize and bring order to a chaotic give in; someone to claim part above the squabbling sects; essentially a dictator. This essay will examine the three immediate causes of the break in of Romes senate and the establishment of an Empire, beginning with Julius Caesars rise to power, and ending with the “ low elimination”, after Octavians claiming of the throne.
Julius Caesar essentially monopolised the Roman Senate with the assistance of Marcus Licinius Crassus, and Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus – the three forming the first Triumvirate. This union insured all three men coarse standing and power within Rome, and granted them complete office staff in Senate. The avarice of the trio would prove limiting, however, as their egos destruct their standing with one another.
Crassus death in 53 BC at the hands of the Parthians effectively undermined the alliance. Shortly thereafter, Pompey aligned himself with an archconservative faction of the Senate, diametrically opposed to Caesar. This shift in alliance resulted in what is known as Caesars civil war, obviously leading to a Caesarian victory. Pompeys death in 45 BC leave Caesar sole ruler of the Roman world.
Caesar used this new control to greatly extend his power, and it would eventually be these advances that would establish a true Empire under his successors. He granted himself the power to veto the senate, and was allowed to dominate the Plebeian Council.
