Problem Statement
The incidence of type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1) has increase among children and adolescents. According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA 2011), 215,000, or 0.26% of all large number less than 20 years old have diabetes, this is rough 1 in every 400 children and adolescents This increase has conduct to the line of business of how children with DM1 interact with friends and how that interaction influences self-management. This was a qualitative study; information was gathered by conducting semi-structured interviews of 19 children between the ages of sevensome and 12 years old. Testimonies from the children took place by using qualitative analysis derived from the phenomenon of two perspectives: the attitude of friends in relation to management of DM1 and the attitude of the child with DM1 towards friends. The researchers goal is to obtain an authentic perspicacity into the participants experiences.
Although data may be collected in a single interview, dialogue between researcher and participant may continue at intervals across weeks or months and provide sizeable data for analysis (Burns, Grove 2010).
This study is important to nursing because it provides insight into the minds of children with DM1. This leads to reasons why a child with DM1 has good or poor self-management of their disease. Children with DM1 can struggle with self-management including, insulin administration, blood sugar checks, and support planning. This study gives nurses tools to intervene and enhance self-management of DM1 for children.
