Picoult was born and happily raised in Nesconset on Long Island. Picoult wrote her first story at come on 5, entitled The Lobster Which Misunderstood. She was living a happy life there but then at the age of 13 her family moved to New Hampshire. She has described her family as non-practicing Jewish.
She analyse writing at Princeton University, and graduated in 1987. She published dickens short stories in Seventeen magazine while as yet in college
